Exercise does not have to be complicated nor does it have to be expensive. To get the most out of my exercise I like to “play.” I like to have fun and enjoy what I am doing. I love getting outdoors and just working hard. Today I joined my husband at our community park on the basketball court. I did not make too many baskets (they were few and far between) but it was a lot of fun. I do not jog because body parts hurt. I do not lift heavy weights because body parts hurt and I respect and listen to my body and the parts that are not quite behaving like they did when I was much younger. I do love to power walk – that is my go to exercise. I love to go out into the fresh air, get into my own head and just walk varying the route, speed and music. Sometimes I even walk in silence.
To keep things interesting, I like to change it up and exercise in my own home with light weights, yoga mats, kettlebells, stretch bands and balance balls. Sometimes I change it up even more by biking or rollerblading. It all keeps me motivated and moving which is very important to do at any age and especially when you get older. Exercise keeps you energized. It keeps you moving and enjoying the world around you.
What is even more important is that I give myself permission to take a day off. It allows my body to recover and rest. It also gives me a moment to be grateful that I can do all these things. I may not be as competitive as I was in days gone past but it still feels like I am having the time of my life while enjoying my life. Find your activity, find your motivation, find that time and the will and do it whatever and whenever you can.
