Thanksgiving is not just about a turkey. It is not just about abundance especially at this time in 2020. Thanksgiving is the beginning of that time of year when we focus on the holiday season that begins with this day and runs through the beginning of the new year. Let this holiday season be a season of healing and reaching out to others who need much more than just a turkey. Let it remind us that there are things in our lives for which we can be grateful each and every day.
Let it make us reflect on ourselves and how we treat others. Think about what we expect of others which is no less than what they should be able to expect from us. We want to be treated with dignity and respect, to be loved and loving, to be listened to and to listen. In my travels both nationally and international, I have seen some of the poorest communities and witnessed a lot of joy, love, support and gratitude side-by-side with a willingness to share those feelings even in the midst of the suffering. Let us remember that every time we are challenged it is an opportunity to grow. Every time we are lost is an opportunity to be found. Every time we are hurt is an opportunity to heal. All of these are opportunities to rise and be grateful that we can.
