Think about it. Each and every day we make numerous choices while interacting with people in ways big and small that will leave a lasting impression. Most of those interactions may come at work, while commuting to work or with our own families and friends. We may see some of these folks every day but there are many that we just see once – it may be only in passing but still we make an impression.
What is the impression that you leave? Many of us walk through the world as if no one else exists. I see people in parking lots, crossing the street, sitting, standing – all with their eyes never leaving their cell phones. Yet, once they realize that someone else is there they give you a look as if you have just intruded in their part of the world very much uninvited and unwanted.
We have been so conditioned to look out for strangers or strange acts or not speak to strangers or make eye contact for fear it may encourage “gasp” conversation. Sometimes it is not conversation that is needed but a simple “hello” or a smile that tells someone you see them and despite what is going on with their day, especially if it is a difficult day, you may be the one bright spot that is remembered.
Whether you realize it or not, you make a choice every day about how you will interact with the world around you. I have never known anyone who had a day where their own day was improved by treating others badly. Rather than thinking that it doesn’t matter how you are remembered because you may never see someone again think about the impact you could make if you realized that it does matter because you may never see them again. I’d rather my impression be one of kindness and joy. How about you?
