“It doesn’t matter what it is. What matters is what it will become.”
Dr. Seuss
I do not know about you but I cringe whenever I hear the expression “it is what it is.” Is it really? Maybe when you are talking about the weather. Maybe when you are talking about what day of the week it is. Get my drift? You are talking about things that are beyond your control. Otherwise it can seem like giving up – why should we even try when “it is what it is?”
Have we really explored all of our options? Have we really looked within ourselves first to see what more we can do to change whatever it is that seems impossible to see if it can be possible? Have we admitted that we need help and recognized that there is no shame in that?
Before we accept that “it is what it is” let us make sure that we have done all we can to see if it can be something else. There is power and strength in taking steps to accomplish the seemingly impossible. It does not have to be big steps. It can be little tiny steps but steps nonetheless that move us slowly toward not what it is but what it can become.

“It is what it is” has often sounded like a cop-out to me, a way of ignoring the situation, just by walking away from it. I greatly prefer “It doesn’t matter what it is. What matters is what it will become.” Life is ften challenging. We take one step at a time to move forward.
