Anyone who knows me knows I am never without my Fitbit. At least 5-6 days out of the week, I am up early trying to get my 10K steps done. I love power walking in the mornings not only for the physical benefits but just to be outdoors starting a new day clearing my head and just taking in the world around me. For some people it’s yoga but for me its just walking that helps me breathe and center myself.
Some days I will admit that it is a little harder than others to jump up and get moving but, on those days, I am so thankful for the family of friends that make up my Fitbit family. We are a group of about 7-8 women (ok – there have been a few men who have come and gone but us women are really committed). We are of different ages, different races, located in different states – most of us have not even met. What’s important is that we have always been there for each other. There is friendly competition, but it is more for support and encouragement. We encourage and inspire each other the try, to get out there and move.
There have been days when I think I will skip my walk and hello – someone just issued a challenge for everyone to be a weekend warrior or a daily challenge. That’s the push I needed that day. I am up and out the door. If one of us had been missing for a day or more, we give that person a nudge or check to be sure that they are ok. I am always claiming “queen for a minute” because the days are gone when I do 20-25 thousand steps a day (and there are several in our group who do but I give them the benefit of age.
This as with almost everything in life is just an example of how connected we all are or can be. There is a connectiveness among us and we only need to reach out and allow people into our lives. For my fitness family, we are first connected through friends of friends with only walking in common. Now, even at a distance and even without some of us ever having met, we formed friendships where we quip with each other, encourage and root for each other and just uplift each other in little ways each and every day. In life many of us try to go it alone but even in your aloneness there can be others just waiting in the background to give you a little support. Let them in – you may find it enriches your life.
