It ‘s Fall y’all – everyone’s favorite season! Time for colorful leaves, brisk weather, holiday anticipation, pumpkins and pumpkin spice everything! I looked all over for a BIG pumpkin but there were none to be found. I did not realize that all the pumpkins went away after Halloween! However, while I may not have found what I want – I do have what I need.

Life these days is just like that. There are those of us who may want to travel, buy more clothes, re-decorate our homes, get and do more and more things but with everything going on around us we need to remember to be grateful that we have. A lot of us have a Thanksgiving dinner we are looking forward to regardless of how different it may look from the one last year. We have a roof over our heads, good health, a source of income. We need to be sure that we take time to think about those will not have their needs met in the days before holiday or the days after when the holiday is over and life returns to the status quo. How quickly all the attention and giving can end, and the loneliness and panic can set in again.
As this holiday season approaches remember that it takes very little effort and almost no money to meet some of the most basic needs out there – the need to be listened to, the need for human contact, the need to be seen. All of this can be done at a distance and safely. If you are limited in what you can give or do remember that we can still help by reaching out. Call a friend especially someone coping alone during this holiday. Stay in touch to help them get through the worst times and the best times. Reach out to an elderly neighbor or someone else who is struggling. No matter how small my pumpkin may seem, I am grateful that I have a pumpkin at all.
