As much as I love to shop – and I do love to shop – some days it seems like the forces of the universe keep trying to make it a not so pleasant experience. You would think with the aging population and the numbers of baby boomers who are retiring with disposable income, there would be a little more catering to women like us. I absolutely hate walking into department stores and the only saleswomen around are twenty or thirty years old who want show me short dresses, skin tight pants and other clothes that may suit their generation but do not necessarily suit mine. Don’t you feel like they are being so overly nice – calling you dear, telling you everything looks good when even you know that look will not work in public.
The clothing designers are conspiring to take away everything that makes clothes flattering. Why suddenly are just about all women’s blouses, sweaters and jackets oversized, boxy, shapeless and bland? Personally I think the oversized, long, shapeless tops make me look fatter and unattractive. They don’t hide anything. Au contraire! It emphasizes everything I don’t want to emphasize. Women of all shapes and sizes appreciate clothes that fit their bodies, show off their curves, and make all us feel sexy and desirable. We work out, we watch what we put into our bodies and sometimes we like to show off our curves .
I think magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar should regularly include models of all ages – we don’t need to be isolated or hidden in magazines for women over 50. We are all in the public eye together. I love fashion as much as much (or more) than the next person. I like to see the clothes on models, in magazines, in store windows but I would like to see more realistic photos, more women who look like me!
